Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to common questions about taxes, residence permits and life in Switzerland.

Residence Permits

What type of residence permit do I need to live in Switzerland?

This depends on your nationality, the purpose of your stay and how long you intend to remain. Switzerland has different categories including Permit L (short-term), Permit B (residence), Permit C (permanent) and Status S (temporary protection). Requirements differ significantly for EU/EFTA nationals and third-country nationals.

Can I work in Switzerland with a Permit B?

This depends on the type of Permit B you hold, your nationality and the basis on which it was issued. Not every Permit B provides the same employment rights. Check the conditions attached to your permit before starting a new job or changing your employment situation.

What happens to my residence permit after divorce?

Divorce does not always automatically lead to the loss of your permit. The consequences depend on your nationality, permit type, the basis on which it was granted, length of marriage and your level of integration. If your permit was obtained through family reunification, the migration authorities may reassess your right to stay.

Can I bring my spouse or children to Switzerland through family reunification?

In many cases, yes. However, the conditions depend on the nationality and immigration status of the person already living in Switzerland, the family relationship and other applicable requirements.

Can I move to another canton with my current permit?

This depends on the type of permit and your individual status. In some cases you may move after completing normal registration at your new place of residence. In other cases, prior approval may be required — especially if your permit is subject to specific conditions.

Swiss Tax Returns

Who has to file a tax return in Switzerland?

As a general rule, Swiss citizens, holders of Permit C and their spouses file an ordinary tax return. Individuals taxed at source may also be required or entitled to file. Additional obligations may arise depending on income level or foreign assets. Applicable thresholds and procedures must be checked based on the canton and individual circumstances.

Do I need to file a tax return if tax is already deducted from my salary?

Not always, but in some cases yes. Individuals taxed at source may be required to file if certain conditions are met. In other cases, they may request a subsequent ordinary tax assessment to claim certain deductions. Deadlines are important — the right to make such a request is generally subject to a statutory deadline.

Do I need to declare foreign bank accounts and property?

As a general rule, Swiss tax residents must declare foreign assets and related income in their Swiss tax return. The exact tax treatment depends on the type of income or asset and any applicable international tax treaties.

What expenses can I deduct from my taxes in Switzerland?

Depending on your situation, possible deductions include employment-related expenses, commuting costs, professional education, Pillar 3a contributions, childcare costs, medical expenses above the applicable threshold, interest on debts and charitable donations. The amount and conditions of some deductions vary by canton.

What should I do if I miss the deadline for filing my tax return?

You should not simply ignore the deadline. Depending on the canton, you can usually request an extension before the deadline expires. If it has already passed, check the status of your case and the requirements of the tax authority as soon as possible.
